Diablo Valley Performing Arts Center

Diablo Valley Performing Arts Center is the Bay Area’s comprehensive school and
performing arts center for MusicActingChildrens’ TheaterImprov, and Performance. Our mission is to provide local professional and aspiring artists a centralized location for services, education, and resources to inspire self-expression through the performing arts.

Located on the Walnut Creek/Concord border on Treat and Oak Grove Road, our 2100 square foot facility houses the following:

  • A fully-equipped Music Lesson Room
  • A Performing Arts Store, where you can buy everything you need for music or acting
  • A large rehearsal space and performance area with stage, complete with professional lighting and sound
  • A complete scene shop with tools and materials

Diablo Valley Performing Arts Center has everything you need to get into the performing arts, especially since we’ve gathered the a set of experienced music instructors, acting coaches, directors, entertainers, and artists all under one roof.

Want to learn music? Our resident music academy, Under The Sun Studios, teaches lessons and classes in the most popular instruments, including guitar, piano, electric bass, drums, and voice/singing. Along with the best instructional methods, we have a great selection of musical instruments to purchase or rent. And, once you get a handle on what you want to play, we have bands, ensembles, Open Mic Night, and
other performances!

Want to act? We’ve got Improv Acting and Theater classes for you and several professional resident theatre companies that perform regularly, like Annex TheatreWorks, Top Shelf Productions, and Rumor Has It Improv Troupe.

Want to perform? Rent our performance space and put your act on stage or join one of our resident companies.

Want to make friends and find costars? Experience a community of supportive and friendly colleagues led by experienced, professional instructors and directors.

Resident Companies

Diablo Valley Performing Arts Center houses the following resident companies:

  • Under The Sun Studios, a modern music academy with a complete curriculum for the main instruments in a standard rock and pop band configuration: Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Drums, and Singing. Additionally, students learn to compose music, work in ensembles, and record and produce their own pieces. Under The Sun Studios’ mission is to give musicians practical and theoretical skills while inspiring a passion for music that allows them to excel at their instrument of choice and express themselves through the language of music.
  • Playground Theatre Company, a children’s theatre arts school and performing company with classes in acting, musical theatre, singing, and stage movement, as well as a performing company which puts on 3 productions annually. Their mission is to provide a safe environment for children to develop their abilities
    to present drama through acting and the theatre arts.
  • Annex TheatreWorks, a professional theatre company that produces 3 mainstage
    productions and 3 laboratory productions annually. Additionally, members of
    this company can study professional acting techniques under the direction of
    experienced directors and teachers in both group and private settings. Their
    mission is to develop challenging theatrical works for a contemporary audience,
    effectively incorporating new technology, reimagining theatrical conventions,
    and setting a new standard in live performance.
  • Rumor Improv, an improv acting training program that holds classes in the
    art of Improvisational acting, an artform with roots as far back as the Commedia
    Del’Arte. Improvisational Acting is taught both as an artform and as a skillset
    to improve other real life skills, including thinking spontaneously, seizing
    the moment, and getting out of one’s head. Rumor Improv also assembles various
    ensembles for performances throughout the year. Their mission is to elevate
    the status of improvisation as an art form and to demonstrate and teach the
    value of improvisation in both theatrical and real-life applications.

Independent Artists

Diablo Valley Performing Arts Center provides resources for independent artists,
including equipment rentals, performance/rehearsal space, and financial services.
Some of the local artists that utilize our services include the following:

  • Stacey Matthews-Winn – private acting coach
  • Kenn Adams’ Adventure Theater!
    - a fun family adventure in which the audience
    is the star
  • The Writing Assignment, an original pop rock ensemble

Charitable Giving and Tuition Assistance Programs

Kinetic Arts Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity provides tuition
assistance and performing arts grants, also hosts regular performing arts events,
free-of-charge, such as regular music and theatre classes. Their mission is to provide
free & low cost access to quality performing arts experiences and education to students
of all ages, regardless of age, skill level, or financial situation.
